In recent years, many travelers have looked to Thailand for an exotic, Southeast Asian vacation. Between its beautiful beaches, sacred sites, vast wildlife, warm weather, cultural festivals, island options, and outdoor recreation, it’s no surprise that Thailand travel and the popularity of its many beautiful cities have grown exponentially in the past decade. If you’ve been considering a vacation to this breathtaking country, here are just a few things you might want to know:
Fortunately, getting to and from Thailand is simple. There are six major airports, which means you have more than enough options to make it to your final destination. Suvarnabhumi International Airport and Don Mueang International Airport serve Bangkok, Chiang Rai Airport is located in northern Thailand, Hat Yai International Airport is located in southern Thailand near the Malaysia border, and Phuket International Airport services the Phuket Province area.
Thailand is both a subtropic and tropic destination where humid, warm weather is common. However, depending on the region you are in, night time and seasonal temperatures can vary.
North, Northeastern, and Central Thailand have dry, humid summers (March-June) with temperatures reaching over 100 degrees. Their wet season (July-October) often consists of thunderstorms and equally as warm temperatures. It’s not uncommon for Central Thailand to deal with flash floods this time of year. During the winter (November-February) the temperatures typically drop to 85-95 degrees with humidity changing to 50-60%. Northern non-mountainous areas of the country can see temperatures reach as low as 50 degrees at night while some mountainous areas can and do experience snow.
Southern Thailand’s temperatures remain mostly constant throughout the year, ranging from the low 80s through the mid-100s. Instead of the seasons you’d typically think of, Southern Thailand is mostly known for having a dry season and wet season. The wet season on the west runs from May-October while the east side is September-December and usually consists of intense, short daily downpours. The dry season is usually from November-March with slightly cooler temperatures and less humidity.
Phuket — This rainforest, mountainous island is located on the Andaman Sea and is home to some of the most popular beaches in the country including Mai Khao and Patong Beach. The area is known for its array of restaurants, bars, busy markets, spas, old shophouses, nightclubs, and more. Visit Monkey Hill to hang out at an elephant sanctuary, visit Phang Nga Bay for water activities, and so much more.
Bangkok — As Thailand’s capital, it’s no surprise there’s a surplus of fun activities here. Visit Pak Klong’s 24-hour flower market, spend your time at beautiful Lumpini Park, enjoy the city’s extensive nightlife, take a historic excursion to the many nearby temples, dine at some of the finest restaurants, and spend some of your vacation seeing the many incredible museums that are just steps from your front door.
Suratthani — Just a short distance north of Phuket on the Gulf of Thailand is Suratthani, a rural province that has beloved features like the Ang Thong National Marine Park where visitors are able to explore the ocean and its exotic wildlife. There’s also Khao Sok National Park which is covered in between jungles and cliffs, and Ko Pha Ngan which is well known for its Full Moon parties and Sunrise Beach. There’s no shortage of great outdoor attractions to see during your visit!
Koh Samui — As an island in the Gulf of Thailand, Koh Samui has become a place for vacationers to enjoy beaches, coconut groves, and beautiful rainforests. Enjoy the many services offered at the world-class spas on the island, visit Fisherman’s Village outdoor market, experience the Wat Plai Lam temple complex, and see the iconic Wat Phra Yai (Big Buddha Temple) with your very own eyes.
