5 Free Things to Do in Aruba That You’ll Love!

Vacations are a great way to explore a place like Aruba, but it’s no surprise that the cost of these excursions and activities can quickly add up. Fortunately, there are a number of free things to do in Aruba that are not only incredibly easy to find but will also help you make all of the same amazing memories as those that come from paid experiences!

Here are a couple of things to do in Aruba for free that you don’t want to miss:

Take a Streetcar Around Oranjestad

Oranjestad is Aruba’s capital and has a bustling downtown area that is filled with shops, restaurants, bars, galleries, and more. Much of Oranjestad has also been renovated to welcome both visitors and locals, which means riding a street car is the perfect way to see everything it offers. The eco-friendly tram has nine stops and is free to the public, so you can hop on and off as you’d like. So, not only will you be able to visit all your favorite places, but you’ll also see all of the colorful buildings and amazing sights of Oranjestad.

Visit the Ayo Rock Formations

Though the Casibari Rock Formations are the most well-known, the Ayo Rock Formations are just a short distance away and a wonderful place for a similar experience while avoiding crowds. For an island that is relatively flat, this unique natural feature is a collection of obscenely large diorite boulders. You’ll be able to see some amazing views, and also experience the preserve’s rock drawings, which date back thousands of years to some of the island’s original inhabitants.

Spend Time at the Donkey Sanctuary

Donkeys were brought to Aruba over 500 years ago to serve as a mode of transportation for island residents. Now, the Aruba Donkey Sanctuary has created a space for these farm animals to live out their lives, protected. Visitors can spend some time visiting the Bringamosa-based sanctuary where they can bring vegetables to feed the donkeys and love on these affectionate creatures. The farm is currently home to over 130+ donkeys and though admission is free, they always appreciate donations to keep the sanctuary running.

Hike Mount Hooiberg Haystack

Though Mount Hooiberg is not the tallest peak on the island, it is a unique hike with a stone staircase for visitors to utilize. This volcanic formation is about 540 feet above sea level and is close to the center of the island. There are over 500 stars to ascend, but it is well worth the time and energy to get to the top. You’ll be able to enjoy panoramic views of the island and the Caribbean Sea, and on clear days, you can see as far as Venezuela.

Take a Trip to the Bubali Bird Sanctuary

The Bubali Bird Sanctuary is positioned on a large wetland that connects to the sea and is home to over 80 species of migratory birds. Here, you can observe fish eagles, herons, cormorants, and so much more. There are roads both for car and foot access, so people of all ages can have the chance to explore this area of the island. There is also an observation tower for anyone who wants that birds-eye view!
