You may be asking, what is bleisure travel? This now common term, bleisure, refers to when an individual turns a business travel venture into a leisure travel experience. This can be done by making a business trip longer to allow time to explore and enjoy the area you might not otherwise see outside of an office or conference room.
This isn’t the first time we’ve discussed bleisure travel as a current popular travel trend. Last year, we created this bleisure travel infographic to take a closer look at who was engaging in bleisure travel and what many of their motives were. Since then, the blending of business and leisure travel is becoming more and more common.
This travel trend is a popular one, and one that is getting more and more popular every year.
Young professionals are traveling more and more for business purposes, some as many as six times a year. And with many vacation days going unused, people are deciding to make the most of these travels and enjoy a mini vacation experience as well.
In a recent 2018 study, 60% of business trips had an added leisure element to them. This percentage is up from 43% in 2016, showing that bleisure travel is rapidly growing in popularity.
Domestic travel is the leader, with 90% of business travel happening in the United States. New York City, Boston, Orlando, Houston, and Phoenix have become some of the most popular destinations for business travel, while also offering travelers plenty of opportunities for fun and entertainment.
And while domestic travel has been the most common, international bleisure travel has completely skyrocketed. In 2016, 52% of international business trips were extended for leisure purposes. Now, in 2018, that has risen to 80%.
