After 20 months of construction, clean up, and repairs, the well-known Hanalei Colony Resort is finally ready to re-open its doors to guests. With the cost of fire and water damages estimated to be over $8 million and some construction still underway, it’s been a long road for the Hanalei team but the hospitality community is thrilled to welcome them back as Hawaii’s busy season begins.
The Hanalei Colony Resort damages began in April of 2018 when the north shore of Kauai was hit with record rainfall, creating disastrous floods that took out entire farms, homes, and created landslides on various roadways. As road repairs on this area of the island were being completed, Hanalei was cut off from the normal traffic aside from road workers and residents. During this time, Hanalei was considered a great resource to the community by distributing food and medical supplies, as well as providing housing to construction workers, volunteers, and government officials through July 2018. In an unfortunate turn of events, a fire broke out in Hanalei’s laundry facility that same July and with limited road access, it took firefighters much longer to arrive at the scene and thus, there was much more damage. The resort lost their laundry and housekeeping facilities.
The problems of road closures didn’t end there. Not only did it take some time to start the many repairs the property so desperately needed, but getting tradespeople and construction teams in and out of the area with minimal access presented even more delays. Currently, there’s still work to be done on the premises. All flood repairs have been completed, but the management team is still hard at work at replacing their lost laundry and housekeeping facilities. After long discussions, Hanalei has decided to open a select number of suites to its guests to move towards this new chapter in the life of the property, including celebrating its 50th anniversary which was missed in 2019. Stays can now be booked beginning December 20.
Hanalei Colony is a beachfront paradise that provides each guest with a unique, intimate, and authentic Hawaiian experience. Their standard and premium suites have either ocean views or are backed up directly to the beach. In-room features include items like island-inspired furniture and decor, private lanais, full kitchens, living and dining areas, beach towels and chairs, and complimentary umbrellas for rainy Hawaiian days.
