At the end of April 2018, Marriott Vacations Worldwide announced its acquisition of ILG Inc. for a $4.7 billion stock and cash deal. ILG is comprised of a number of popular timeshare brands, including: Vistana Signature network, Interval International, and Hyatt Vacation Ownership. This merge has allowed Marriott and ILG members access to Marriott Rewards, Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG), and Ritz-Carlton Rewards, as well as the announcement of a new Marriott rewards points chart later in the year. The new Marriott Free Night Award chart for standard redemptions rates has recently been released and will be effective starting August 18th. Though the new points system won’t have a new name until 2019, this chart gives us some insight to what we can expect from the merged programs. Here is some basic information you’ll want to know:
To begin to understand free night redemption, you’ll want to know some vital transitions happening to Starpoints. SPG members will notice their points will now reflect those for the new Marriott Points reward chart system, which includes a 1-to-3 ratio conversion. For example, timeshare owners with 30,000 StarPoints will be transferred to 90,000 points in the new program and will also be used for rewards charts such as these. Similar conversions apply to their hotel loyalty program and properties as they have been assigned Categories for their value.
One of the most desirable aspects about this merge is over 6,500 hotels and resorts that will become available to points members. From Marriott resort destinations to Design Hotels to Aloft, there will be something for everyone in this collection. There are also additional benefits such as no blackout dates, airline mile conversions, and more for vacationers to indulge in during their stays.
Each participating property has been organized into a new award Category depending on its desirability. With Category 8 redemption rates not being released until 2019, Category 8 properties are current listed as Category 7, which will provide loyalty members with significant savings—up to 25,000 points per night when they reserve at future Category 8 Marriott or other properties similar.
Over 50% of the properties that will be participating in this new redemption program will require fewer points to redeem a free night. Fortunately, there are even some luxury properties that will be taking a reduction in points cost. Generally, most of SPG’s St. Regis locations have experienced a redemption points drop, which has made vacationing at an exceptional property even more attainable for vacationers.
Marriott Vacation Club, Ritz-Carlton Club, and Vistana Signature Experiences will have many properties that will face increases. There are a few locations within each brand that will remain the same or will decrease, but they will generally require more points for redemption because of their quality, location, and more.
It’s important to remember that this new redemption chart is for standard redemption rates. It won’t be until 2019 when we will see seasonal rates, especially during busier travel times throughout the year. They will function similar to Marriott weeks and peak and off-peak seasons will vary from location to location.
