As part of its commitment to corporate social responsibility and the environment, leading vacation ownership and exchange company Wyndham Destinations has announced Wyndham Destinations Asia Pacific’s newest partnership with food waste recycling service, City of the Gold Coast (the City), in a food waste recycling trial. The trail will assist commercial customers in preventing as much food waste from entering landfills as possible.
This service, which fits right in line with Asia Pacific Wyndham’s WYNDGreen program, allows participating businesses to remove their food scraps from the general waste and turned into certified, organic compost by the City to be used in Gold Coast’s parks and gardens. In Wyndham Surfers Paradise’s first quarter of participation in conjunction with the restaurants in their building, have created 2.5 tonnes of usable compost.
“We are proud to be a part of this fantastic initiative. We are committed to doing all we can to reduce our carbon footprint and preserve our beautiful natural resources long into the future,” said Gold Coast at Wyndham Destinations Asia Pacific Area General Manager Kaydee George.
This isn’t the only way Wyndham Asia Pacific is actively helping the environment. In an effort to prevent pollution, preserve natural habitats, and conserve resorts, 34 properties and eight offices within the Asia Pacific division have significantly cut their use of plastics and have invested in environmentally friendly technologies and practices. These changes include reusable coffee cups at Wyndham’s Gold Coast Cafe, BioPack plant-based cutlery and packaging, as well as battery and soft plastic recycling stations. Additionally, they have also banned all balloons and plastic straws in all of these locations.
“This has saved the planet from potentially damaging litter from balloons, which turtles are known to ingest when they are mistaken for jellyfish. Plastic straws, which are only used once are one of the most prevalent litter items in our oceans and by making this change we are saving the planet from approximately 400,000 plastic straws per annum. More and more travelers around the world are placing importance on hotels and resorts that implement eco-friendly practices. Through our WYNDGreen Program we are proud to be focused on education and innovation that improves the environment, supports global and local communities, and develops sustainable practices,” said Wyndham Destinations Asia Pacific Sustainability Manager Ben Perkins.
The commitment doesn’t stop at their properties, either. Recently, WYNDGreen requested their suppliers to eliminate plastic wrappers on individual biros and USB deliveries which has removed 127,000 plastic wrappers per annum. The division also hosts annual litter and beach clean up collections and upcycle clothing swaps.
